Team RACC Takes Strides to Fight Heart Disease

Members of Team RACC spent their Valentine's Day at Underwood Parkway in Wauwatosa, participating in the Healthy Heart Club Run/Walk.
The event honors the late Steve Cullen, a Milwaukee alderman who died of a heart attack in 1995. He was 40 and an avid runner.
Over the years, the run has drawn dozens of Cullen's former political friends and foes, runners looking to get a jump on the upcoming season and a large contingent from the Cullen family.
The course along the Underwood and Menomonee River parkways is scenic and somewhat challenging, with an uphill finish toward the Wil-O-Way Clubhouse parking lot. Take a look below at our collection of event photos, courtesy of Bonnie DeLap.

16 Year Old LCL Student Gives Birthday Gifts to RACC

McKenna Shannon, a sophomore at Lake Country Lutheran High School, is great role model and an amazing young lady.
She used her birthday as a chance to give back to kids with cancer. Rather than receiving gifts at her birthday party, she asked that her friends and family donate to Racers Against Childhood Cancer. Here is what McKenna had to say:
"My name is McKenna Shannon and I chose to have friends and family donate to RACC instead of giving me gifts for my 16th birthday, because I really wanted to give back. I'm so blessed and really have little to complain about. RACC does wonderful things and I wanted to support it so that great things can continue and even greater things might occur in the future."
McKenna does not have family or friends directly affected by childhood cancer, but just had this on her heart as something she could and should do.
McKenna's friends and family gave a total of $126.00 to RACC. We can't thank her and her guests enough for their generosity the spirit of giving is alive in the heart of this young lady. RACC thanks McKenna for joining us in the fight against childhood cancer.

| 20 Triathlons in 24 Hours August 30-31, 2008 | Team RACC Makes Outstanding Showing To Help Fight Childhood Cancer
24 & 8 Hours of Triathlon Supports RACC
Loaded down with bikes, swimming gear, running gear, food, water, Gatorade, and GU for four people, Team RACC headed to Denver for the 24 & 8 Hours of Triathlon presented by Suzuki and Newton. RACC was designated as the event's official charity.
With five teams competing to defeat childhood cancer, RACC is pleased to announce that a total of $9,889.28 was raised. Thank you to all the teams who joined in our fight.
Team PowerBar/Tri Oakies raised $4,767.28, Just Havin' Fun raised $2,112.00, Lord Have Mercy raised $1,095.00, Team RACC raised $1,600.00 and Runnin' Bikin' S'women raised $255.00. These all are amazing people with their own reasons for joining in the fight. We can't thank them enough for putting the extra effort into making 24 hours of Tri mean something to more people.
The day started early at Cherry Creek State Park in Denver, Colorado. The parking lot became the pit area and home to 400 participants. tents, sleeping bags, blow-up mattresses, lanterns, RVs, campers, coolers, and racing equipment popped up on the blacktop. The racers' meeting was held and the 24 hours of Tri began at 8 am. Every team had to complete one entire triathlon in order, after which they could complete additional legs of the event in any order. Team RACC banked up 21 swims during the day the swim course was open from 8:00am to 6:30pm and then again Sunday from 6:00am to 8:00am. Many teams had the same game plan: bank up the swims and catch up with runs and bike during the evening and over-night.
The science of it all is amazing to watch. Each team had created their own chart to track the number of swims, bikes, and runs they had completed. At the end of the 24 hours Team RACC had completed 20 full triathlons with a swim and a bike extra. They took 4th overall in their division [missing third place by 15 seconds] and completed 293 miles.
Team RACC is making plans to participate in the 24 Hours of Tri again next year and are looking to involve more teams. Please contact us if you are interested in participating next September 26-27, 2009.
